FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q Are there differences in how men and women experience domestic violence?
A There are both similarities and differences. Some of the responses to violence from a partner are the same. Whoever you are, being hurt by someone you love and trust can be devastating. You may feel bewildered and confused. You may wonder if it's your fault. You may feel too ashamed or embarrassed to tell anyone. If you do tell, you may find that you are not believed or that your abuse is trivialized. For all victims of abuse, the message is the same.
Q Is ESTEEM confidential?
A Yes, however if you disclose information which suggests a child or another adult is at risk it may be necessary to disclose this to a relevant third party.
This will not be done without your knowledge and if possible with your permission.
Q I am having problems with my partner being violent to me but I'm too afraid to press criminal charges. Can you help me?
A Yes, we can help you understand the process and put you in touch with a domestic violence officer, relevant legal advisor or solicitor.
This is not designed to get your partner into trouble but to try and stop the violence.
You should, however, report the incident to the Police and inform them should you proceed to take out an injunction.
